Laying Down a Prima/Liga/Stada/Mina Pitch

These pitches are made by Woodentop, a table soccer supplier in the UK. The surface is a velour type, comparable to the old Subbuteo Astropitch. Liga and Prima pitches have been used alongside Astropitches in major table soccer competitions. This style of pitch comes with an adhesive backing. The following is a set of instructions to help you successfully apply the pitch to a board.

MATERIALS LIST:

Pitch
Masking Tape
MDF Board 3/4 inch thickness cut to size*
Marker/pencil
Friend to assist

* the board should allow 2-3 inches larger than the dimensions of the pitch around the perimeter

PROCEDURE:

1. Unfurl your pitch and lay it place it in desired position on the board.
2. Use masking tape to secure pitch in position. 5 inch strips near the half way lines and ends should suffice.
3. Mark the position of the corners of the pitch with a pencil or marker
4. Slowly remove a 2 inch section of backing from one end of the pitch. Use your corner marks to guide you as you slowly smooth out the pitch onto the surface with your hands.
5. Trouble shooting tip: If you notice any wrinkles now is the time to gently pull the surface back up and re-smooth. If you have to pull it back up do so with minimal force. Pulling too hard can result in stretching of the material which will damage the pitch.
6. After applying approximately 4 inches of the pitch you can safely remove any remaining masking tape.
7. Have your helper hold up the pitch and apply very light pulling tension.
8. Continue to remove the backing and smooth surface a few inches at a time

Helpful tip: I always budget 20-30 minutes for this process. It is worth taking your time to get it right from the beginning.

Building a Table

The diagram provides a detailed plan of the construction of a table soccer table. You may only wish to build the top of the table. Many players utilize a 4 foot long folding table (available at office supply stores) to lay their table top on. This also helps with storage.

You may prefer (especially if a tall adult) to build your table allowing for a 35 inch height, as this would be more comfortable to play on. Materials needed include for table top:

MDF* Board 3/4 inch thickness cut to size (depends on pitch size - allow 2-3 inches free space outside of perimeter of pitch. You may want to paint this perimeter area)
Wood Glue
Pine wood for surround
wood screws 1 1/2" - 2" length
Drill/screwdriver
Saw/mitre saw
Measuring tape
Sandpaper

* MDF is very heavy! I recommend it as it resists warping. Players have used chipboard with success, although support battens underneath the board may be a good idea if you go this route.
